Project SEKAI COLORFUL STAGE! feat. Hatsune Miku (プロジェクトセカイ カラフルステージ！ feat. 初音ミク), commonly known as Project SEKAI and officially localized in English as HATSUNE MIKU: COLORFUL STAGE!, is a Japanese rhythm game developed as a collaboration between SEGA, Craft Egg, Colorful Palette, and Crypton Future Media.
Nearly all of the game's playable songs feature VOCALOIDs or other vocal synthesizers, particularly those owned by Crypton Future Media. The Cryptonloids are also characters in-universe, forming the VIRTUAL SINGERS unit. They live in digital worlds called SEKAI, appearing in different forms to help young people discover their true feelings.
The game follows these VIRTUAL SINGERs as well as 20 brand new characters that make up various musical units, set in Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan. Each unit (having 4 characters each) has their own SEKAI that they can enter by playing a mysteriously-appearing song called "Untitled." Each VIRTUAL SINGER has a variation in these SEKAIs as well, acting as general guides and mentors for the other characters.
Songs include existing VOCALOID songs as well as newly commissioned ones for the game. Nearly all songs have SEKAI versions, which are sung by the game's characters.
In the game's gacha, one collects cards featuring the characters (these may also unlock costumes for them that can be viewed on their 3D models). There are visual novel-style character stories and viewable short conversations on the home screen (both in the real world and each SEKAI), as well as regular digital concerts performed by the game's musical units that players around the world attend at the same time.
The VIRTUAL SINGERS (バーチャル・シンガー) are a group of pre-existing VOCALOID characters owned by Crypton Future Media. In Project SEKAI's real world (just like our real world), they are synthesizers used as vocalists by music producers, but they exist as people in digital worlds called SEKAI. Each SEKAI has its own version of each VIRTUAL SINGER, with generally different personalities and goals but shared names and appearances.
